Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy (1837-1887) was an outstanding Russian painter and draftsman who occupies a special place in the history of Russian artistic culture. He was also widely known as an authoritative public figure, the inspirer and organizer of the Association of artists-peredvizhniki, a brilliant critic. Kramskoy was engaged in genre, historical and portrait painting. He created a gallery of portraits of major Russian scientists, artists, writers and public figures, among them portraits of Leo Tolstoy, I. I. Shishkin, P. M. Tretyakov, M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, S. P. Botkin. These works are characterized by expressive simplicity of composition, clarity of drawing, thoroughness of light and shadow modeling. The master accurately recreated the appearance, the peculiarities of the spiritual and psychological makeup, the richness and intensity of the inner life of the models. The edition includes about 90 works by Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy, an article about his biography and genres of painting in which the master worked, as well as the main stages of his life and work.
