The effect of the picture unfolds in 1984 in the Vitebsk region of the Belarusian SSR. The truck in which there were criminals who robbed a rural store and who was persecuted by an traffic police officer disappears on the forest track. The search begins, but as a result they find the corpse of the girl.
This case is entrusted to local specialist Mikhail Shakhnovich. The senior investigator for particularly important cases Leonid Ipatiev comes to the aid of Minsk. A mutual hostility arises between them. At first, Ipatiev suggests that the robbery and loss of the traffic police officer are associated with the murder of a girl. Shakhnovich clings to this idea and arrests the first who came across, forcing them to take the blame on themselves. Ipatiev continues to conduct both things and concludes that the detainees are innocent. He is trying to convince the leadership of this, but Shakhnovich’s authority outweighs, and the accused receive real terms. However, the corpses of women continue to find in the Vitebsk region.

The basis of the 10-episode picture was one of the most scandalous affairs of the Soviet Union-the case of the Vitebsk strander Gennady Mikhasevich, who in the period from 1971 to 1985 committed 36 murders. During this period, investigators made more than 10 judicial errors, and Mikhasevich himself became a long -term nightmare for the calmest republic of the Soviet Union - since then his name has been listed among the most cruel serial killers and stands the third after Andrei Chikatilo and Anatoly Onoprienko.
