Russian painting is a unique phenomenon in art. Up to the XVII century it did not go beyond the religious canons. In the era of Peter the Great's reforms, Russian art turned to the traditions of secular painting. Only a few decades it took talented Russian masters to pass the path that European artists mastered for centuries.
