The 'History of Painting in Masterpieces', a project created by the staff of the Department of History of Art of the Russian State University of Fine Arts, will help you decipher the plot of a painting, discern curious details, learn more about its history and the fate of its author. The first volume is devoted to the works of the masters of the Italian and Northern Renaissance. Each section of the disk opens with a review article and consists of a number of illustrated stories-descriptions. The 'Themes and Genres' section covers the emergence and development of such important genres as portraiture, landscape, and altarpiece, and traces the history of a variety of Old and New Testament, historical, mythological, and allegorical subjects in European art. In total, there are more than 1400 illustrations, detailed descriptions of 120 paintings by 50 artists.
