The publication examines the monuments of defensive architecture of the Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Aglabids, Fatimids, Zirids, Hafsids, Ottoman Turks, Bey dynasties, fortification of Spanish naval bases, pirates, the Mareth Line, fortified Berber villages and many others. The evolution and design of fortification is presented against a broad historical background. A detailed guidebook with descriptions of surviving monuments is included at the end.
The publication is richly illustrated with a large number of the author's photographs, maps, plans, and reconstruction drawings.
The author of the work is Konstantin Sergeevich Nosov, a famous historian of fortification, Doctor of Historical Sciences, director of scientific work of the Center for the Study of the History of Fortification (CSHF), chief scientific editor of the journal 'Questions of the History of Fortification'.
