Ichthyol ointment is an external anti-inflammatory and antiseptic agent. It is used for treatment of various infectious and inflammatory diseases of the skin, mucous membranes and pelvic organs. Ointment is used very widely and not only for treatment of the skin inflammatory processes but also in gynecological, urological and proctological practices because it is able to be absorbed into a local bloodstream through the mucous membrane of colon or vagina. The Ichthyol ointment contains the ichthammol as its active component. The latter, in its turn, is a sulfur-containing compound.
