The book is based on the dissertation "Zervanism as the phenomenon of spiritual culture in ancient and early medieval Iran," defended by the author at the philosophical faculty of MSU named after M.V. Lomonosov in 2008 and becoming one of the winners of the competition for the best candidate dissertation held annually by the scientific council of the philosophical faculty.
The research attempts to reconstruct the phenomenon of Zurvanism, which the author understands as an Iranian religious-philosophical doctrine or a circle of ideas based on the recognition of the supremacy of Time and Destiny and a pessimistic anthropology. The author draws on similar studies by Western European Iranists, primarily R.C. Zaehner and H.S. Nyberg. A wide range of issues is considered: methodological problems of studying Zurvanism, historical explication of Zurvanism, the problem of searching for and defining its ideological origins, reconstruction of Zurvanite myths, cosmological and anthropological beliefs.
