The lower army of Zaporizhzhya arose in connection with the onset of Lithuanians and Poles for the Middle Dnieper and East Podoli. The Cossacks were forced to defend their freedom with weapons in their hands and build small wooden fortifications - "towns", or "Sich". In approximately the 30s of the XVI century, there was a combination of disparate Cossack groups associated with individual "sections", and the Zaporizhzhya Sich formed. She retained her independence for a long time and occupied a prominent place in international relations. The heroic struggle of the Zaporizhzhya Sich against the Sultan Turkey and the Crimean Khanate seriously undermined the military power of these states. Various European states were looking for a military alliance with the Zaporizhzhya Sich and established diplomatic relations with it.
