In the political history of Ukraine of the XX century, Peter Shelest belongs to a special place. Having watched a difficult life path, he in 1963 became the first secretary of the Communist Party of the Communist Party of Ukraine. Supported N. Khrushchev and his political line, but it turned out to be among those who led to power L. Brezhnev. He played for the suppression of the Prague Spring of 1968 and at the same time blocked the total suffocation of dissent in Ukraine. He recognized the Stalinist authority and at the same time demanded that the Moscow leadership adheres to the officially declared principles in the relations of the center and the then "Union republics". He was against dismantling the USSR and at the same time facilitated the strengthening of Ukrainian national traditions, respectful attitude to the past of Ukraine.
