The published papyrus code contains the foundations of the foundations of the Gnostic teaching - a religious course close to early Christianity and at the same time competitive to it in the 2nd -IV centuries. N.E. A complete and commented translation of this code into Russian is carried out for the first time. And although it is based on a German publication, it differs from the latter completeness of philological commentary and the presence of sections that orient the Russian edition on a much wider reader audience.
Professor D. Eltester told me the background of the publication of this manuscript, and it turned out to be so eloquent that I convey it literally: “Above the publication of three Gnostic works contained in the Berlin papyrus No. 8502, the evil rock truly burdened. The story began with the fact that in 1896 at a meeting of the Berlin (Prussian) Academy of Sciences (SPAW, JG. 1986, S. 839 ff. = SB in 1896), Karl Schmidt read a current report on the Coptic papyrus just acquired. In the introduction to the first of this, C. Schmidt, back in 1905, notified the reader that in the second volume, three more works of the Berlin Code, which still remained in a handwritten form, should be published.
The publication of Coptic texts, which was supposed to precede their translation in the GCS series, was almost ready for the exit in 1912 (five printed sheets were ready, the sixth with the key to the sign was already approved for printing) when the pipe accident in the basement Printing houses in Leipzig destroyed almost everything. During the First World War and in the post -war years, attempts themselves were prohibited to restore the lost. Only shortly before his death (April 17, 1938), K. Schmidt began preparing a new publication, which was supposed to be made from the cleaners who had at the disposal of K. Schmidt. And then there was a new delay, this time associated with the death of K. Schmidt and with the difficulties that arose when searching for his personal copy in the home archive of the deceased. And only in early May 1939, the Tu editorial office finally received the author’s original. ” According to the imprints of 1912 in 1939, the Coptic text was printed in an offset method
