The new novel by Vera Orlovskaya, "Women's Writing," is written as if with a delicate brush, with calligraphic precision and beauty reminiscent of Japanese characters. The title of the novel is taken from a real existing women's script, originally invented in China and later adopted in Japan. The heroine of the novel from the 17th century uses this particular script. However, the female soul knows no national or temporal boundaries. Another heroine of the novel, living in modern-day St. Petersburg, also writes letters to her long-lost friend. It is more of a diary of the soul for this woman, Lyubov, and for that distant Japanese woman, Yoko. The intrigue of the novel lies in how these destinies are connected, encompassing everything: St. Petersburg, Morocco, Madrid with its wine and flamenco, Crete, ancient Japan, tea ceremonies, ikebana, the mystery of the city on the Neva River, and simple human relationships that are truly complex. There is the living, sensual, fragile, and deeply personal, the things people in a hurry fail to notice in order to grasp the beauty of this world, which waits for us to become more open, attentive, and kind to notice that our world is not just pain, war, suffering, and fear. It also contains love, beauty, and that poignant feeling of happiness - just to exist!
