What era is associated in the mass consciousness with witch hunts, the burning of innocent people at the stake on superstitious accusations of witchcraft? Most people would say it's the dark Middle Ages. But in reality, the persecution of witches took place during a period that Europe takes pride in - the Age of Discovery, the Renaissance, when science and art were flourishing. Historian Nikolai Speransky noted this "untimeliness" of witch hunts, as well as the fact that they bypassed Eastern Europe and Russia, and concluded that this twist in history calls into question the notion that Western European countries were always more progressive than their neighbors. In his essay "Witches and Witchcraft," Speransky described the paradoxical history of church persecutions of witches and the legal proceedings of the Inquisition. Interrogations of witches were a humiliating and hopeless process for women accused of witchcraft. The accused were cruelly tortured until they confessed to drinking children's blood or turning into a cat at night, and then they were burned at the stake if they endured the torture. This cruel practice affected almost every corner of Western Europe. The author analyzed the reasons that led to the obsession with fighting witches: the role of the church in society, the status of women, ignorance regarding mental illnesses.
