The Winter Palace was not only the main ceremonial residence of the Russian monarchs, but also a repository of priceless national treasures collected by Catherine II. It served a multitude of functions: representative, residential, cultural, and administrative-economic, all of which are given special attention in the book. Over the years, the Winter Palace witnessed much: human happiness and sorrow, deaths, the rise and fall of statesmen, sieges, changes in interiors to suit new authorities, and survived the siege of Leningrad... The spirit of this place was woven from the events that took place within it, the people who lived there, and the mysteries that surrounded it. It is associated with a huge number of legends, and it is a legend itself. In this book, the author has tried to open the doors of the Winter Palace for the reader and show the old walls where the lives of people who largely determined the fate of the country unfolded: from the projections to the facades, covering all three floors. The narrative is accompanied by paintings, photographs, and documents.
