“Winter of our anxiety” (1961) is the last novel by Steinbeck, incredibly modern and relevant, although its action takes place in the 60s in New England, in a fictitious small town. The main character is Ethan Allen Hawley, a descendant of a once -rich family, a veteran of the Second World War, an educated, decent and honest man, is in a difficult situation.
He is forced to work as a seller in a grocery shop. Itan, accustomed to a completely different life, is not easy to come to terms with such a fall. Then he comes to a deal with a conscience in order to gain the previous status and position. However, the dishonest fraud, who returned wealth to the hero, do not make him happy
