We know Winston Churchill as a prominent political and statesman figure, a fighter against Nazism, and finally, a Nobel Prize laureate in literature. In a survey conducted by the BBC in 2002, the British recognized him as the greatest Briton in history. However, Churchill was primarily a man of his time, a passionate defender of the British Empire and imperial idea. It is this aspect of his political career, without which the portrait of Churchill would be incomplete, that is addressed by the well-known British-Pakistani writer, historian, publicist, and activist Tariq Ali. As head of the British fleet during World War I, Churchill made a series of catastrophic mistakes that cost thousands of lives. His attempt to crush Irish nationalists left wounds that have not yet healed. Even the most revered period of Churchill's political career, during the war against Nazi Germany, was marked by a famine in Bengal that claimed the lives of over three million Indians, clashes between British forces and the National Liberation Army of Greece, and other "dark pages" meticulously documented in Tariq Ali's book.
