When magic turns deadly one day, Iris Gray swears not to tell anyone that she is a witch. It doesn't matter that the Magical Council found her innocent, it doesn't matter that her magic was once considered a wonder - one night at the lake changed everything. Moving to the state of Washington, Iris lives a normal life, hiding the fact that she is a witch. To cope with anxieties and worries, she writes spells, but never uses them. She enjoys working at the sanctuary managed by her mother, but their intern - ornithology student Pike Alder - only evokes disgust in her, as he hates witches.
One day, Pike says something particularly nasty about witches, and Iris decides to write a cruel curse for him. But when she is about to burn the spell in the fire, an owl swoops down from a tree, snatches it, and flies away from the sanctuary. This owl is a powerful amplifier, and if it dies, Iris's dark spells will not only affect Pike but everyone in the area.
Iris and Pike have to venture into the forest together to find the bird, whose fate determines his life, but he doesn't know the truth. On their journey, they will face many dangers, and Iris will have to decide how far she is willing to go to keep her secrets.
