Hereditary Cossack Alexey Yuryevich Kalmykov dedicated 28 years of his life to studying the genealogy of his ancestors and the history of the Cossack people. In the pages of this book, the author accurately describes the life of the Cossack people using the example of the Kalmykov Cossack family, based on materials from the family archive, numerous publications about Cossacks, and information from state archives. In the form of ordinary spoken language, the book's author partially reconstructs the lost Cossack speech of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the Don region, modernizing it with his own language. At the end of the book, a brief "Don Dictionary" is included. The study of the vocabulary of the Don Cossacks and the "Don Dialect Dictionary," the material of which was collected by an ethnographic expedition in the Don villages and hamlets from 1917 to 1927, helped the author in writing this book. A special place in the book is devoted to the spiritual essence of the Cossacks, their free-spirited nature. This book will be of interest not only to Cossacks and their descendants but also to all readers interested in the history of the Cossack people.
