Alexander Ivanovich Herzen (1812–1870) was a Russian writer, publicist, and revolutionary. In his political life, he criticized the monarchical system and advocated for socialist reforms. He published the almanac "The Polar Star" and conducted social policies in the weekly newspaper "The Bell." His works written in exile were particularly important for literature, as they allowed him to express his true position on many issues that concerned him. The main question in his novel is the one posed in the title: who is to blame?, and the answer to it should be hidden within those pages. At the same time, the socio-psychological nature of the book implies a multitude of interconnected fates that one must be able to follow. Vladimir Beltov becomes the main spokesperson for the author's ideas, and his fate confirms the belief in the collapse of serfdom, which the ruling class cannot acknowledge.
