In October 1973, Leonard Cohen went to Sinai, where fierce battles were taking place between Israel and Egypt. These 18 days will go down in history as the Yom Kippur War: it began on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, a day when the fate of each person in the new year is decided: who will pass away, who will be born, who will perish by water, and who by fire, as sung in one of the prayers of that day. Cohen went to the front with his weapon - his guitar. Together with Israeli artists, they traveled around Sinai, performing for soldiers at the front lines and in the rear, in the back of a truck and on board a ship - at night, between battles, wherever they had to. But during his lifetime, Cohen hardly spoke about this. Journalist and writer Matti Friedman ("The Aleppo Codex", "Spies of No Country") decided to reconstruct the events of half a century ago. He tracked down witnesses of those concerts, studied Cohen's archives, his notebooks and manuscripts, reread and re-listened to all the singer's interviews, in order to piece together his journey and try to understand what that war meant in the life of the pacifist poet.
