"White" is another volume by M. Pastoureau, complementing his previous research on the history of color in Western Europe over the centuries. Giving credit to debates on whether white is a color, the author suggests that we consider its full chromatic status when conducting historical analysis. This time, the French medievalist raises the question of how white was perceived at different times: was it synonymous with colorlessness? Did it have a clearly positive connotation? The book explores different aspects of white, its evolution from a color of religious cult (analogous to the sacred) and monarchy to the active integration of white into the sports and medical fields in recent history, as well as in contemporary hygiene concepts. Pastoureau pays special attention to the duality and pairing of white-black and white-red, where these colors become opposites of each other. This study sheds light on the evolving symbolism of white and its role in various historical contexts from ancient times to the present day. Michel Pastoureau is a historian and medievalist, a professor at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris, and the author of books such as "Black," "Blue," "Green," "Red," "Yellow," and "The Devil's Cloth: A History of Stripes and Striped Fabrics," published by NLO Publishing House.
