The new work of the well-known Australian and American historian Sheila Fitzpatrick is dedicated to the unusual topic of Russians in Australia. After World War II, it was the Green Continent that became a new homeland for thousands of displaced persons - people who, during the war, were scattered across Europe and for various reasons did not want to return home to the USSR. In turn, the Australian authorities sought to solve the problem of labor shortages in the country, so the cooperation, while not cloudless or ideal, was still mutually beneficial: thousands of people boarded ships to start a new life. A second wave of Russian immigrants flowed from Manchuria, where a large Russian diaspora had been living for several decades, formed during the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway. However, with the rise of the Chinese communists to power, the Russians were forced to leave their settled places, and Australia became a new home for many of them. These journeys were full of dramatic events, sometimes with detective twists, where even "the most ordinary person could likely tell the most extraordinary story of the hardships endured."
