Fyodor Dostoevsky has become one of the symbols of Russian culture that still define Russia's image worldwide. The early works of the writer - a sentimental novel, according to the author himself, "White Nights," and an unfinished novel about a suffering child, "Netochka Nezvanova" - tell stories of shattered dreams. The love story of the main character with the girl Nastenka sheds light on his lonely life but does not bring happiness. Sentimental and sensitive characters cannot withstand the collision with reality. Thus, the fate of Netochka Nezvanova anticipates the appearance of the exalted heroines in Dostoevsky's famous novels. The theme of the suffering child is continued in the well-known story "The Boy at Christ's Christmas Tree." These works clearly show the origins of his later works.
