Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821–1881) was a Russian writer, philosopher, and publicist, one of the most widely read authors in the world. His works influenced many thinkers of the 20th century, including Jean-Paul Sartre and Friedrich Nietzsche. Having gone through a complex life path, he gifted the world with numerous works, the distinguishing feature of which can be described as an unbearably deep sadness of the truly Russian soul. In "White Nights," a dreamy protagonist, detached from life and trivial matters that so disturb those around him, meets a young girl who brightens his loneliness. He lives on a small allowance and holds an insignificant position. Because the life of the main character is joyless and lacks a bright future, he escapes into his own world of fantasies, where finally someone else appears who can understand him. The story touches on the most popular themes of that time, namely: the "little man" and the "dreamer" of the big city.
