Paris is the heart of France. Few would argue with this statement. However, for at least twelve centuries of its history, Paris existed without a stable position as the capital of Gaul or France. Could its capital future have been foreseen back then? In general works on the history of Paris, its brilliant destiny is usually considered as something obvious and predetermined by the course of history. But a historian should not, like a careless student, fit the problem to a known answer. The authors set out to write about the "non-capital" history of Paris, although there are few sources about this period. Legends, stories of saints' miracles, fragmentary information from chroniclers, rare archaeological finds... Based on this scarce data, the little-known, albeit lengthy, period of the "prehistory" of the great city is reconstructed. The surviving traditions sometimes have very peculiar relationships with scientific truth. But the inhabitants of the capital city of Paris, up to the present day, fervently believed in them and, without noticing obvious contradictions, revered them as truth. To what extent did the "dark" period of Parisian history influence the city's future destiny? What in today's urban environment has its roots in that ancient era? These questions are answered in this book, intended for a wide range of readers.
