The novel "What Is to Be Done?" by Nikolai Chernyshevsky is one of the most controversial works in Russian literature. The novel was published in 1863 and immediately sparked heated debates: from sharply negative reviews by conservative writers to enthusiastic praise from the revolutionary-minded youth. According to contemporaries, there was not a student or even a high school student who had not read "What Is to Be Done?". During the Soviet era, Chernyshevsky held an esteemed place in the literary world, and his main work became part of the mandatory school curriculum. Today, revisiting the novel "What Is to Be Done?" prompts a reevaluation of its significance in the history of Russian literature and social life. The publication includes two of Chernyshevsky's most important works on aesthetics, where he criticizes the theory of "art for art's sake," as well as responses to the novel by N. S. Leskov and D. I. Pisarev. The novel is accompanied by illustrations by the artist Vladimir Petrovich Panov (1931–2007).
