The training manual covers key phenomena in the Western European literature of the 20th century: a radical renewal of the artistic language, a new concept of reality, a skeptical attitude to the rationalistic forms of cognition. The positivist picture of the world is destroyed, characteristic of both classical realism of the 19th century, and the realism of the XX century. “Epistemological uncertainty” gives rise to images of the world as chaos and absurdity. Alienation, loneliness acquire the status of subjectivity in modernism, and the result of philosophical reflection is the Nietzschean model of eternal return. In the postmodernism, “epistemological uncertainty”, due to the new worldview and aesthetic paradigm, rejects the status of subjectivity, the hierarchy of meanings, the “power of interpretations”.
New postmodern strategies literary games with readers, a change in the function of the author-demiurge creating the subject-semantic world, openly demonstrate the conventionality of the literary text. Artistic innovation of postmodern prose from I. Kalvino to M. Pavich determined new prospects in the development of the art of the turn of centuries. The new artistic practice of the French novel of the 1980-1990s is due to the change in the aesthetic paradigm from the radical gap with the tradition of its reconstruction.
