In "The War of the Worlds," Herbert Wells created an image of a massive existential threat to humanity - a threat that forces us to reevaluate all the achievements that humans had reached by the beginning of the 20th century. What is the value of the so-called "progress," social and economic changes in a critical situation? Can humans survive when the state is powerless and they, once citizens endowed with a wide range of rights and freedoms, become mere prey, objects of hunting? The famous radio broadcast on November 30, 1938, and the public reaction to it showed the relevance of the problem outlined by Wells. And even now, over a hundred years after the publication of the novel, numerous books, films, and plays continue to be released on the theme of the demise of humanity - which means that Herbert Wells' shot hit the mark precisely.
