A traveler, writer, diplomat, orientalist, Yegor Petrovich Kovalevsky participated in many military and intelligence expeditions. He was invited by the Egyptian vice-king for geological research in North-East Africa. He managed to indicate one of the first to indicate the correct geographical position of the sources of the White Nile, which was confirmed much later. The first in the Russian geographical tradition gave a detailed description of Abyssinia. He accompanied the Russian spiritual mission to China, concluded a Kuldzhinsky treaty with China, which contributed to the expansion of Russia"s influence in the Zaili Territory. He managed the Asian Department of the Foreign Ministry, was an assistant to the chairman of the Imperial Geographical Society
