In 1857, Thoreau "retreated from the world" and spent two years in a cabin he had built himself on the shore of Walden Pond. The result of his voluntary seclusion was a book consisting of 18 interconnected chapters-essays called "Walden, or Life in the Woods," which continues to have a huge influence on a wide range of youth holding nonconformist beliefs. "Conscious consumption," rejection of the cult of material success, love, and careful attitude towards nature are just a few of the ideas that contemporary society has drawn from Thoreau's book. It is the first book in Western culture where simplicity and self-sufficiency, intellectual improvement, and closeness to nature are openly offered as a worthy alternative to the "consumer society."
