The war ended ... Father, who was considered dead, unexpectedly returns. A man will re-get acquainted with his sons, but an abandoned and not recognizing any authority of the boys, he seems completely someone else"s person - a dictator, with whom the brothers, Victor and Vad, decide to fight.
And around - hunger, unexploded shells, lack of work. In search of the best share, the family moves to his native village of Father. But there is no salvation here: the same ruin, and with it - suspicion and fearless attitude towards each other. Parents of boys go to buy a goat - after all, milk means satiety and prosperity. But the goat does not become a symbol of a happy life ...
In the tragic story of Yevgeny Dubrovina, the history of heroes becomes the history of the entire post-war country. The writer is piercing and at the same time very simply spoke about the most important thing: about humanity and kindness, about growing, the difficulties of choice and responsibility - for the decision taken and its consequences. Realistic, sincere and truthful work found a bright shaped embodiment in the illustrations of the artist Elizabeth Bukhova
