Among the statesmen of medieval Russia, Vladimir Monomakh takes a special place as one of the most talented and educated Russian princes of the Domongolian era. He was called Monomakh because his mother was the daughter of the Byzantine emperor Konstantin Monomakh. Becoming the Grand Kiev Prince aged 60 years (1113), Vladimir Monomakh managed to strengthen the shaded political unity of the Kiev state. He managed to establish the world between Russian princes and send their efforts to fight steppes, so during the reign of Vladimir Monomakh, the Russian lands rested from Polovtsy raids
