The work of American Slavist, Professor of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literary University of Southern California Marcus Levitta is well known to specialists in Russian literature. His new monograph is dedicated to the little-known works of Russian authors of the XVIII century, such as Poem V.K.Tebredakovsky "Feoptia", and familiar to every Russian schoolboy, such as, for example, "travel from St. Petersburg to Moscow" A. Kradishchev. Applied prof. Levitt method of studying the visual via verbal, that is, the close consideration of the author"s attempts "see yourself" in the artistic text, allows you to cover a large material and build a fascinating story about the formation of the Russian identity of the new time
