After losing his father, Sashka is left completely alone - far from home and without a penny to his name. It wouldn't be easy for him, were it not for a passing mullah who takes him in! Now Sashka must get used to life in a Bashkir village, unfamiliar customs, magical tales, and songs. He works for the kind-hearted uncle Mirgali, falls in love with the beauty Altynai, and the bookworm Zaynab teaches him the local language...
Beyond the outskirts of the village lies the forest-urman. There, horned warriors-artaqi loudly shout in the thickets. Proud shurale rule there - they say that their dark forest blood flows in some of the villagers. Spirits wander there, twisted trees creep up on unsuspecting travelers, and a one-eyed demon mutters something - whispering, lulling forever... Beware, human, look both ways and stay on the path!
When a mysterious crime occurs in the village, the villagers quickly accuse Sashka. But soon it becomes clear that this is just a part of a tangled story that has been going on for many years, and the connection between the village and the forest is much stronger than it seemed to both humans and non-humans.
