In the history of Russian literature, there are few works that can compare in popularity and the truly nationwide love that fell upon the famous poem "Vasily Terkin" by Alexander Tvardovsky, an outstanding Soviet poet and writer, chief editor of the legendary magazine "Novy Mir," which became a mouthpiece of freedom during the "Thaw" era. The main part of the poem was created during the years of the Great Patriotic War and was printed as separate chapters, which had a resounding success with readers, with those living through the war eagerly awaiting the continuation of the book about the brave and unyielding soldier. "'Vasily Terkin' is the best of everything written about war during the war," commented Konstantin Simonov on the poem.
In this collection, in addition to "Vasily Terkin," there is also its continuation - "Terkin on the Other Side," written ten years after the end of the war, the poem "House by the Road," dedicated to the fate of Russian women during the war, as well as selected poems created in different years of life, including "I was killed near Rzhev," "On the day the war ended," and others.
