Vasily Alexeevich Pushkaryov was appointed as the director of the Russian Museum in 1951, at the end of the Stalin era, and was removed from this position in 1977, during the Brezhnev stagnation years. Opinions about him varied, but all agreed on one thing - that he was 'not so simple'. For Pushkaryov himself, everything was quite simple. His professional creed was encapsulated in the motto 'to collect and unquestionably preserve'. Pushkaryov, as a 'gatherer' for the museum, was very proud of his acquisitions and obtained what he considered important for the collection wherever he could: from the heirs of artists, from other Soviet museums, from foreign collectors. And his personal ethical code - 'if you go the right way around, you can achieve something' - served as a great support during all those years of struggle with Soviet bureaucracy.
This book is about Soviet museum culture, about the Russian Museum during the time of Vasily Alexeevich Pushkaryov, and, of course, about him. About meetings, sensational exhibitions, and the 'secret rooms' of the museum that Pushkaryov filled for almost 25 years with works of banned artists.
