"All that is written - explanations, interpretations of works - is completely unnecessary. The mystery, the puzzle of the image itself cannot be expressed in words at all," said Ivan Chuykov. Nevertheless, he tried - and he succeeded. Not all artists are skilled with words - their material is different. But conceptual artists, as a rule, mastered them - since the essence of their activity partly consisted in exploring the boundaries between word and image: often conceptual works are reduced to a commentary or documentation of a visually absent image. Ivan Chuykov (1935-2020), a classic of Russian uncensored art, unlike many of his colleagues, engaged in such research without leaving the field of visual arts - his verbal and analytical gift was realized in interviews and letters. From them, he himself compiled this book, but unfortunately did not live to see it published. At the same time, the book does not only represent the author. It allows one to look inside the artistic movement to which the author belonged and in which he was one of the main figures - but to look at it in a very individual perspective, the perspective of an innate painter, a person with 'visual talent'. 'For me, everything starts not with some idea that needs to be presented in a painting, object, or installation, but always with a certain visual idea, a visual image - I just want, need to create such a painting, such an installation. And all explanations - a posteriori - are attempts to rationally explain, understand to oneself what is going on.'
