The outstanding Danish Slavist Adolf Stoder-Petersen (1893–1963) is widely known for the studies of Russian literature and the Old Russian language, but primarily the historical and philological surveys dedicated to the Russian-Scandinavian relations of the 9th-11th centuries. In this volume, his most important publications on this topic are collected, which have never previously been translated into Russian. The most important and not having lost its scientific significance is his monograph “Varangian traditions as a source of“ Tale of Bygone Years ”, in which the question of the cultural interaction of Byzantium, Russia and Scandinavia based on the transference of military tales was first raised. The etymology of the designations of the Scandinavians in ancient Russian sources (articles on the names of Russia, Varangian, Kolbyag) were considered by the author in a wide historical and cultural context, taking into account the evolution of their meanings. The works of A. Solder-Petersen will be of interest not only for experts in the history of ancient Russia and Russian-Scandinavian relations of the Viking era, but also for folklorists, mediaists and culturalists, as well as for all readers interested in early history and cultural medieval Europe
