Valerian has a multifaceted effect on the body. It has a calming effect on the excited nervous system. Valerian regulates the activity of the heart, acting through the central nervous system on heart palpitations. Valerian improves the secretory function of the gastrointestinal tract, relieves esophageal spasms, helps regulate bile secretion and excretion.
The therapeutic effect of valerian is due to a complex of substances contained in it, primarily essential oil and alkaloids. The roots and rhizomes of valerian contain up to 2% essential oil.
Valerian preparations are used as a sedative for insomnia, nervous excitement, neuroses of the cardiovascular system, tachycardia, as well as in epilepsy, asthma, migraines, gastrointestinal spasms, and in the treatment of neurodermatitis. Sometimes valerian is used in combination with bromine preparations, cardiac and sedative agents.
