Anatoly Naumovich Rybakov (1911–1998) was a Soviet Russian writer and screenwriter, author of novels and short stories. The protagonist of the novella "The Unknown Soldier" (1970) is a school graduate named Sergey, who comes to visit his grandfather in a small town and gets a job in a road construction brigade. During the construction works, the builders discover an unknown soldier's grave. Sergey is tasked with identifying the deceased soldier. The reader becomes an eyewitness to the story of the heroism and death of five unknown soldiers in the distant summer of 1942. The name of the soldier buried in the unnamed grave is established, but the most important aspect is the return of the sense of connection to the past of their country and their people in the hearts of the people. For some, war is history, but for others, it is a life given for the Motherland and peace.
