The collection is devoted to the study of the urban context of the evolution of universities of the Russian Empire of the pre-revolutionary period. Researchers from Russia, Germany and Estonia show how the life of the university person of the beginning of the XX century with his immediate surroundings was connected. The history of science is rethought by them in terms of studying the conditions for the production of knowledge and its institutional framework. The authors of the versatile analyze the "local" history of the universities of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan and Tartu (Derpte, Yuryeva), leaving the usual - departmental and faculty or ideological and political approaches. The abundance of comparative material and the German "accent" book is determined by the fact that it was Germany and her universities that remained a model (or repulsion point) in the changing social life of the Russian higher education
