I. S. Turgenev found St. Petersburg not in the magnificent glory of a great city, but in an era when the 'eternal sleep of Peter', once praised by Pushkin, had formed that immovable environment that resisted any change, stifling the breath. A sense of constriction and indignation was shared by the entire progressive intelligentsia of that time, yet St. Petersburg remained the heart where the cultural life of Russia beat. Turgenev was an integral part of it. His friends and fellow writers lived in St. Petersburg, his works were published and staged here. It was here that the writer met his beloved and muse Pauline Viardot, to whom he remained deeply attached until his death. The book by G. Ya. Byaloy and A. B. Muratov tells the story of what St. Petersburg was like for Turgenev, where he fled to feel the air of freedom and where he mysteriously returned again and again.
