Senior investigator Denis Bukharin, through the efforts of his influential father-in-law, is sent from Moscow to "exile" in St. Petersburg. His familiar life crumbles in an instant, but there is still work to be done, and in the first days in his new location, Bukharin encounters a mysterious murder: the victim's eyes are filled with blood, and there are terrible burns on the tips of their fingers. But the most astonishing thing is that the same traces were found on the body of another victim, discovered in Moscow on the railway tracks just a few days before Bukharin's unexpected transfer to the Northern capital. Could there be a serial killer at work in the country? And if Denis was not given a chance to fully investigate the crime in Moscow, perhaps he will be able to uncover the mystery here, in St. Petersburg? A strange girl named Asya Naumova helps Denis figure things out: by education, she is a paleontologist, by profession, a photographer. This unusual pair of detectives will have to find out how the victims from the two capitals are connected, but the main question remains: will they be able to prevent new crimes and catch the cunning killer?
