Wanting to relax after the construction of the railway in the Volga region, the writer decides to go travel and outlines the route: Siberia, the Far East, through the Pacific Ocean to America and through Europe back to St. Petersburg. Before leaving, he received a proposal to take part in a major research expedition, which went to North Korea and Manchuria and led by A. I. Zvelygintsev. This proposal, although several and violated Garin’s plans, was very willing to him very willingly, since it was the opportunity to visit one of the most interesting areas of the foreign Far East.
Garin became one of the first European travelers who visited the country, which, due to the isolationist policy of the Korean government for a long time, was inaccessible to foreigners
