The book presents a story, perhaps, about the most extreme journey in the latest history of mankind - about the conquest of the North Pole of the polar night. In December 2007 - March 2008, two Russian travelers - Matvey Shparo and Boris Smolin - passed 1000 kilometers from the mainland to the pole at the limit of human capabilities: in a pitch hazel and hellish cold, expecting that every night the abyss could open under the tent. Quoting diaries, recordings of telephone conversations, the author of the book - Dmitry Shparo - creates the effect of presence, which ensures incredible dynamism of the narrative. At the same time, he does not smooth out the sharp corners, he openly talks about the “wrong side” of travel - about mutual insults, misses and inconsistencies, accompanying the organization of any significant project.
The second part of the book is devoted to no less amazing events - nine Russian youth expeditions to the North Pole under the leadership of Matvey Shparo and Boris Smolin, the first of which took place in 2008, and the latter in 2016. The book is designed for the widest circle of readers.
Dmitry Shparo is a famous Soviet and Russian traveler and writer, the head of the expedition, who was the first in the world to reach the North Pole. This achievement of Dmitry Shparo was listed in the London Book of Guinness Records, in the USSR he was awarded the highest award - the Order of Lenin. In 1988, the Soviet-Canadian expedition led by D.I. Shparo crossed the Snow Arctic Ocean along the route: the USSR - North Pole - Canada. For this transition D.I. Shparo was awarded the second most important Soviet order of the "Red Banner of Labor", as well as the prestigious prize of UNESCO "Fair Game"
