General Saad el-Shazly has an impeccable service record. He is considered the 'Arab Margelov' - the creator of Egypt's airborne forces. He served as the commander of the United Arab Forces in Congo (1960-1961), military attaché of Egypt in London (1961-1963), commander of special forces (1967-1969), and commander of the Red Sea district (1970-1971). The pinnacle of his military career was when he became the Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces and led the crossing of the Suez Canal followed by the capture of the once impregnable Bar-Lev Line in the Arab-Israeli War of 1973. This brilliant achievement was undermined by the decision of the Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat to rid himself of Soviet military assistance and fight independently. The stubborn Chief of Staff was made the scapegoat. General el-Shazly's book reveals little-known aspects of Middle Eastern conflicts. It discusses the role of the USSR in building Egypt's armed forces after the 'Six-Day War' of 1967, details the course of the new war that started so promisingly, and its tragic conclusion for Egypt.
