The diary of Valerian Albanov is the only account of the lost expedition of G. L. Brusilov on the schooner 'St. Anna'. In October 1912, the schooner was crushed by ice and frozen into the immobile coastal ice. Leaving the board of the trapped ship, Albanov led a group of ten people in an attempt to organize assistance for the expedition members.
This is one of the most poignant episodes in the history of the Arctic. Valerian Albanov's diary is a unique testimony of human perseverance, patience, and courage. This book has influenced generations of Arctic explorers, who find in it many instructive examples of overcoming obstacles while traveling through drifting ice, vivid descriptions of the nature and wildlife of the Arctic, as well as detailed instructions on how to make necessary items for an ice trek from available materials.
