In 1988, while opening a poetry evening of Alexander Kushner in Boston, Joseph Brodsky called him the greatest Russian lyric poet of the 20th century. This high praise reveals its meaning in comparison with the definition that Kushner himself gave to poetry: "What is lyric poetry? It is a special, warm attention to a person, to any object, any thing on earth, it is a special relationship to the world, its phenomena, a view of things and people, colored in personal, heartfelt tones." It is this freedom in choosing the subject of speech, sensitivity to the world, and sincerity in relationships with it that distinguishes the entire poetic corpus of Kushner.
Starting to be published in the late 1950s, when the mainstream of literature fulfilled ideological tasks, and a little later by pushing representatives and whole schools of reaction in the form of new avant-gardists and language experimenters, Kushner wrote and continued to write poems about trees, the sea and stars, childhood memories, architecture of his favorite city, sad dreams, about love, life, and death - paving the way for that true poetry that invariably looks into the smallest events of life, penetrating its depth.
This collection reflects the existence of Kushner's poetic talent over five decades. During this time, his poems have become an integral part not only of Russian but also world poetry, but, like any genuine lyric poetry, they live in the present day, belonging to eternity.
