Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky (1823–1886) was a famous Russian playwright and the founder of the national theater. "You have brought a whole library of literary works as a gift to literature, and created your own special world for the stage. You alone completed the building, laying the foundation with the cornerstones of Fonvizin, Griboyedov, Gogol," wrote critic I. Goncharov about him. In the play "The Storm," A.N. Ostrovsky depicted the life of a merchant town in the mid-19th century and the personal tragedy of anyone who dared to resist the "dark kingdom" of bourgeois life. The main character, Katerina, is dreamy and original, unable to tolerate the rough treatment towards herself and suffering from unjust reproaches from the widow Kabanova, who keeps the whole family in obedience. Not willing to accept the difficult life in a house with a despotic landlady, the girl challenges the usual norms. She takes a big risk when she decides to cheat on her husband with the one her heart truly loves. Even the fictional town of Kalinov cannot turn a blind eye to this transgression.
