The author is the memoirist writer Alexandra Viktorovna Bogdanovich (1846–1914), the former hostess of one of the largest social salons in the Russian capital, frequented by high-ranking state officials, church figures, and representatives of cultural and social life.
A. V. Bogdanovich kept her diaries from 1879 to 1912. They provide a characterization of the most important historical events and describe impressions from meetings with salon visitors: the Chairman of the Council of Ministers S. Y. Witte, the city mayor N. M. Baranov, the Minister of War P. S. Vannovsky, the director of the police department P. N. Durnovo, and others. A significant portion of the entries analyze the state activities and personal lives of the last three emperors of Russia: Alexander II, Alexander III, Nicholas II, and their closest circle.
