"Fathers ate sour grapes, and children's teeth are set on edge" - a biblical quote that accurately conveys the "upper", "plot" layer of Yasunari Kawabata's novel "Thousand Cranes". The story of a nervous, introspective young man named Kikuji, whose father's mistress persistently tries to replace his mother and propose a marriage, another one inexplicably starts a romance with him, and he falls in love with her daughter, who in turn has complex and ambiguous feelings towards him. In the hands of a Western author, this story would have been portrayed as a comedy, but Kawabata was Japanese, and therefore his novel, permeated with national symbolism (where the recurring images of the crane and the tea ceremony are just the most obvious), and numerous allusions and references to the masterpieces of the Heian and samurai eras, remains one of the most brilliant, aristocratically refined, and ambiguous works of the past century.
